Once touted as the natural successor to Joni Mitchell, singer/songwriter Rickie Lee Jones proved no less idiosyncratic or erratic; like Mitchell, Jones experienced significant commercial success at the first of her life history, but a unsatisfied creative spirit -- combined with a refractory refusal to fit well into any one musical recess -- sealed her ultimate destiny as that of a highly regarded cult heroine.

Jones was innate on November 8, 1954, in Chicago, but the volatile relationship between her mother and father resulted in an bringing up that light-emitting diode her everywhere from Phoenix, AZ, to Olympia, WA, where an expulsion all over her school calling. As a teenager, Jones began crapulence heavily, and finally she left home and began drifting up and down the West Coast before subsiding in Los Angeles in the mid-'70s. There she worked a series of waitressing jobs spell at times acting in area clubs, where she panax quinquefolius and honed her unique, Beat-influenced spoken give-and-take monologues. She as well began a relationship with mate boho Tom Waits.

Her first base measure of success was as a songster; after her friend Ivan Ulz panax quinquefolius Jones' composition "Easy Money" over the phone to Lowell George, the ex-Little Feat frontman included it on his album Thanks I'll Eat It Here. Then in 1978 Jones' four-song demonstration came to the attention of Warner Brothers executive Lenny Waronker, world Health Organization enlisted Russ Titleman to co-produce her self-titled 1979 debut LP. Spurred by the success of the jazz-flavored hit unmarried "Chuck E's in Love," Rickie Lee Jones became a smash both commercially and critically, earning praise for Jones' elastic vocals, pictorial pun, and unequaled fusion of folk, idle words, and R&B.

With 1981's follow-up, Pirates, she gave early notice that her music would not sit still; employing yearner and more composite song structures, her lyrics tackled themes of organic evolution, change, and death. Two geezerhood after, she returned with Girl at Her Volcano, an EP collection of live jazz standards and studio apartment outtakes; with 1984's The Magazine, she made another leftfield turn, teaming with composer James Newton Howard for her slickest, most synth-driven outing to date.

Problems with alcoholic beverage, business difficulties, and the birth of a girl effectively sidelined Jones for a good deal of the decennary; she did not resurface until 1989's sterling Fast Cowboys, produced by Steely Dan's Walter Becker and recorded with the assistance of the fantastic Scottish trio the Blue Nile. Don Was took over the yield reins for 1991's Pop Pop, on which Jones covered ballads ranging in origination from Tin Pan Alley to the Haight-Ashbury spell backed by jazz players including Charlie Haden and Joe Henderson. After 1993's Traffic From Paradise, she embarked on an acoustic tour; Naked Songs, a document of those unplugged shows, followed in 1995. Ghostyhead was released in 1997 and the standards record book It's Like This appeared trey old age later.

She returned to original material in 2003 with The Evening of My Best Day, an album that verbalized her wrath with contemporary American politics. During the summer of 2005, Rhino released the three-CD anthology Duchess of Coolsville. Two geezerhood after, The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard, a arresting compendium of songs based on friend Lee Cantelon's 1997 good Book The Words, came proscribed.

Giddily swiping ideas from several decades' worth of alternative endocarp, New Orleans electro-rock quartette Mute Math at times recall New Order's synth-dance epics, the shambling ruffle of the Stone Roses and the rest of the Madchester view, the spiky gelidity of premier Radiohead, Air's serene ambient pop, and jolly incongruously, the prosperous vocals of mainstream alt-rockers of the post-Eddie Vedder epoch. Singer and keyboardist Paul Meany, once of the Christian rock radical Earthsuit, was living and operative in New Orleans when in 2001 he began a long-distance melodic correspondence with drummer and programmer Darren King, wHO was based in Springfield, MO. Sending CD-Rs back and forward up the Mississippi River, Meany and King wrote sufficiency songs together to win over King to relocate to New Orleans and start a right band. Adding guitar player Greg Hill and bassist Roy Mitchell-Cardenas, the new ring completed the Meany-King compositions in 2003; Meany took the resulting demo to famous CCM manufacturer Tedd T., wHO was enthusiastic sufficiency to lead off up the indie label Teleprompt Records to spillage 2004's Reset EP. The EP was successful adequacy to military reserve Mute Math and Teleprompt to negociate a diffusion dispense with Warner Brothers, which reissued the EP in 2005. Although Mute Math completed their self-titled debut full-length that same twelvemonth, disputes between Teleprompt and Warner Brothers about how the album was to be marketed delayed its acquittance for near a twelvemonth. Because Warner Brothers wanted to promote Mute Math as a CCM band instead of an flip rock ring, thereby restricting their mainstream photo, Mute Math and Teleprompt Records filed suit claiming severance of sign on and negligent deceit. The band's cyberspace site announced that the courting was settled knocked out of courtyard, concurrent with the sign language of an improved plow with Warner Brothers. An expanded version of Mute Math, featuring remastered tracks from Reset and a incentive limited edition alive EP, was released on September 26, 2006.

Originally known as "the Annoying Thing," the helium-voiced, blue-gray, anatomically slump CGI lump Crazy Frog became a pop culture epidemic in Europe and especially the U.K., with ringtones, TV commercials, pop songs, and other forms of (over)exposure. Though Crazy Frog manic disorder began its momentum in 2004, the character's introduction took several years. In the late '90s, Swedish stripling Daniel Malmedahl began recording his impressions of internal combustion motors; after he performed on a television system show, the impressions were posted on the Internet and became a craze among file-sharers. Fellow Swede Erik Wernquist, a figurer animator, heard Malmedahl's noises in 2000 and was elysian by his impression of a moped motor to create the Annoying Thing, and posted the living on his internet site, where it also became a popular Net attractive force. Though Wernquist ab initio credited the Annoying Thing's voice as "Anonymous," Malmedahl eventually contacted him and Wernquist gave citation where it was due.

The Annoying Thing made its debut as a merchandising tool in 2001, when it appeared in Belgian ringtone commercials. By 2004, the reference -- rechristened Crazy Frog -- was commissioned as a sound and video recording ringtone for cellular phones and was attended by a massive ad push that included a inundation of TV commercials. Crazy Frog's popularity under the weather in the spring and summer of 2005, when the uncut single of the "Axel F" ringtone, which was created by members of the German production team Bass Bumpers and based on Harold Faltermeyer's instrumental report for Beverly Hills Cop, topped the U.K. singles charts for several weeks. It was so pop that it unbroken Coldplay's comeback unmarried, Stop number of Sound, from debuting at number one. Later that summer, the ringtone and full-length album Softheaded Frog Presents Crazy Hits pronounced the Frog's reaching in the States. In 2006, the Crazy Frog phenomenon was static level-headed in Europe, with toys and gadgets available and a potency TV series in the industrial plant; that summer, the Frog dropped some other album, ably named More Crazy Hits.

Worth Watching: Master of the Internet

This is the best mid-90s retro parody commercial I've ever seen.  They must've actually gotten out an old VHS camcorder and set up 15-year-old computers and software to increase verisimilitude... impressive.

After digging around, it looks like these are the same guys that did this mid-90s retro soap opera parody, which has about the same aesthetic.
